Overview
Every co-founder of StudentsBoat has lived the problem we are solving. When we arrived in the United States as international students, we did what every incoming student does, we opened Craigslist, joined Facebook groups, and started searching for housing from thousands of miles away, with no local contacts, no credit history, and no idea what a legitimate lease was supposed to look like. One of us wired a deposit to a landlord who disappeared. Another spent the first two weeks in a hostel because the apartment in the photos did not exist. All of us spent months in housing that felt wrong, wrong culture, wrong expectations, wrong rules and before we understood why the tension existed and what we could have done differently. We are not the only ones. The Institute of International Education reports that more than 1.1 million international students enrolled in US universities in the 2024-2025 academic year. The FBI documents rental fraud as one of the fastest-growing internet crime categories. Universities house fewer than a quarter of their international students on campus. The platforms students turn to were never designed for someone arriving in an unfamiliar country with no local network and a move-in date three months away. We started StudentsBoat because we knew this problem from the inside, and because we had, between the three of us, exactly the skills needed to build the solution it deserved. Our CEO has built and scaled ventures before and knows how to take a product from idea to market. Our CTO graduated from IIT and builds the AI matching and verification systems entirely in-house, no outsourcing, no shortcuts. Our COO spent years inside a FAANG and Big 4 Audit firms learning what operational discipline at scale actually looks like. The idea for the platform came not from a whiteboard session but from a conversation the three of us had about what we wished had existed when we arrived. We wanted one place that would verify the housing before we paid for it, match us with a host whose expectations of shared living were compatible with ours, generate a lease that actually fit a nine-month academic calendar, and walk us through setting up a bank account and a phone plan and renters insurance in a country where we knew no one. That platform did not exist. We decided to build it. Today, StudentsBoat is pre-launch and pre-revenue. The MVP is 80% complete. We have 1,000 or more students in organic WhatsApp communities we built with no paid marketing. We have run 22 successful test placements. Four universities have expressed partnership interest. And we have spent 18 months in deep conversation with the students this platform is designed for as because the most important thing we learned from our own experience is that you cannot design a product for this person without understanding exactly what it feels like to be them. We are building the trust infrastructure that international relocation has never had. Not because it is a good business opportunity though we believe it is but because we know what it costs people when that infrastructure does not exist. We paid that cost ourselves. We would like to make sure the next generation of students does not have to.
Traction
as reported by the founderStudentsBoat is pre-launch with strong pre-revenue indicators. The founding team has bootstrapped $9,000 to 80% MVP completion, built four organic WhatsApp university communities with over 1,000 active members and 60% weekly engagement at zero paid marketing cost, recruited nine performance-based campus ambassadors, completed 12 successful test placements with 100% completion and no disputes, gathered 1000+ students on a pre-launch waitlist, and received verbal partnership interest from Portland State, Oregon State and University of San Diego. Seventy-two percent of 25 universities contacted expressed partnership interest. Having 60+ host families willing to join the platform, MVP launches in June 30, 2026.

International students face a housing market that was never built for them. University dormitories serve fewer than 23% of international students at most major research universities, according to ACUHO-I, forcing students to navigate unfamiliar rental markets without local credit history, references, or knowledge of local lease law. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center identifies rental fraud as one of the fastest-growing internet crime categories, with average losses of $2,000 to $3,000 per incident. Standard 12-month leases are structurally misaligned with 9-month academic calendars. And the cultural mismatch between students and their housing arrangements drives isolation, academic underperformance, and dropout rates documented in the Journal of International Students. No platform today solves all of these problems in one place.
StudentsBoat's defensibility comes from four compounding layers that take years to replicate. First, a six-layer verification system covering identity, background, property, financial capacity, references, and university or employer status, required 18 months to design and builds a fraud rate below 0.1% that general platforms structurally cannot match. Second, a proprietary AI cultural compatibility engine using the Hofstede Cultural Dimensions framework creates tenant-host matches that reduce early lease terminations, improving outcomes that every competitor lacks the data to replicate. Third, a library of 50 or more regionally compliant flexible lease templates represents significant legal investment across eight jurisdictions, creating switching costs for hosts and students who rely on our lease generation. Fourth, university institutional partnerships require 6 to 12 months per institution to establish and create co-branded distribution and official endorsement that cannot be replicated through advertising. These four moats compound through network effects: every new verified user improves the matching data, every new university adds credibility, and the platform becomes measurably more valuable with every transaction.
The combined international student housing and young professional relocation market represents approximately $167 billion in annual spending globally. According to the IIE Open Doors Report, 6.1 million students study outside their home countries annually, spending an average of $9,200 per year on housing, a $56 billion market growing at 8 to 10% annually. The Worldwide ERC estimates the corporate relocation services industry at $25 billion in the United States alone, with young professionals on 3 to 12 month assignments representing an underserved and growing subset. Our serviceable addressable market, international student housing in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia is approximately $56 billion. Our Year 5 obtainable market target of $2.9 billion represents 5.2% penetration, capturing approximately 1 in 20 students in our target geographies.
The international student housing market fragments across three competitor categories, each with a structural limitation that defines the space StudentsBoat enters. General Platforms (Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, WhatsApp Groups). These platforms account for the majority of how international students and professionals currently find housing. They are free, widely used, and entirely unverified. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center's 2023 report identifies rental fraud as one of the fastest-growing internet crime categories, with average losses of $2,000 to $3,000 per incident. These platforms have no financial incentive to build trust infrastructure because their revenue model is built on volume, not quality. Short-Term Accommodation Platforms (Airbnb, Booking.com). These platforms are safe but designed for tourists. A student paying nightly Airbnb rates for an academic year would spend over $30,000 which iss four times the cost of a standard lease. Their unit economics are incompatible with student housing at $750 per month, and they have no cultural matching, flexible lease, or settlement capabilities. Student-Specific Platforms (Student.com, Amber Student, HousingAnywhere). These platforms offer purpose-built student housing search with basic identity verification. None provide cultural compatibility matching. None have flexible lease infrastructure. None address settlement support. They reduce but do not eliminate fraud risk, and they leave the compatibility, flexibility, and settlement problems entirely unsolved. No competitor addresses all four dimensions , verification, cultural matching, lease flexibility, and settlement support in a single platform. That gap is StudentsBoat's entry point.
